Chapter Twenty-Four

When they arrived in downtown Richmond, Frankie parked near the courthouse. Getting the marriage license was easy. Waiting in line was not. People looked at them as though they were paupers. Frankie had on loose jeans with holes. Sofia wore yoga pants and a tee shirt. The best gear for a long ride. Others had dressed for their weddings. He could tell it bothered Sofia. He watched women in line look at her in disdain until they saw her engagement ring. Compared it to whatever they wore. After that, the whispers faded.

As soon as they finished the paperwork, Frankie steered her toward the nearest exit. “Let’s go for a walk around town before we go to the hotel. I didn’t have a chance to buy wedding rings. I thought we’d use your engagement ring. If there’s a jewelry store around, we could see if there’s something we like.”

Nothing made a woman smile more than jewelry. Frankie had learned this lesson long ago. Plus, if she smiled, so did he. When he held the store’s door open for her, a salesman in a suit looked down his nose at Frankie’s baseball cap and jeans. Frankie ignored the look in favor of Sofia’s interest in rings. When the man in the suit approached, Frankie spoke first. “We’d like to see some wedding rings.”

“Let me show to you some simple selections at the end of the counter,” the man said. He motioned them away from the diamond and tungsten bands.

Frankie didn’t want Sofia to suffer embarrassment on their wedding day. He put a hand on her waist to guide her toward the door. She didn’t move. “I like this one,” she said and pointed to a set of matching diamond wedding bands in the case. “It would go well with this.” She wiggled the fingers on her left hand. Her huge diamond twinkled under the store’s lights.

“Ah. Of course.” The salesman smiled, which made Frankie smile.

Once Sofia had the judgmental jeweler eating out of her hand, Frankie crossed his arms over his chest, leaned on a jewelry case and let her do all the talking. He listened as she gushed over the high-priced diamond bands.

“So many lovely choices,” she said. “I just can’t make up my mind.” She walked away.

“Sorry,” Frankie said to the salesman. He turned his baseball cap backward and followed his woman out of the store.

“You were merciless with that man, Sofia. Maybe you should be the boss.”

“He deserved it. I can’t believe the way he looked at us.” She laughed and took his hand as she pulled him down the sidewalk.

“Yeah. Let’s see how we’re received at this grandiose hotel we’re staying at.”

The handholding surprised him. Did she love him a little more than yesterday? Or did all brides act like that?

His heart a little lighter, Frankie drove onto the hotel’s stone circular driveway. They sat before the old historic building, complete with a clock and bell tower. Sofia waited with the car while he tried to check them in.
